Separation reduces both risk and troubleshooting time

Putting every device on one flat network makes accidental access and broadcast problems more likely. VLANs create logical boundaries, but firewall policy decides what can cross them.

Start with trust levels

Staff devices, guest phones, cameras, voice and controllers have different users and update cycles. Group them around risk and operational need.

Write allowed flows

For example, viewing stations may reach cameras while guest Wi-Fi reaches only the internet. Avoid rules that simply allow everything between VLANs.

Keep management controlled

Switches, access points and recorders should use restricted management access with named administrators and backed-up configuration.

Project checklist

  • Document VLAN IDs, subnets and permitted flows
  • Test required services after firewall changes
  • Keep guest access isolated from internal addressing

Practical takeaways

  • Define the operating requirement before choosing products
  • Document interfaces, failure behaviour and ownership
  • Test the completed system and keep records for support
FAQ

What clients ask us.

Do VLANs replace a firewall?
No. VLANs separate networks; routing and firewall rules enforce what traffic is allowed between them.
Will separation slow the network?
A correctly sized and configured design should improve control without harming normal performance.
