What actually decides whether a CCTV system works?
What we most often find on sites we are called in to fix is not too few cameras but too many cameras in the wrong places. An image that cannot identify a face or read a number plate is no use as evidence, however many of them there are. So we start from the site drawing and the entry and exit routes, and give every point a purpose: face identification, plate reading, or general observation — each with a different angle, lens and mounting height.
Resolution and identification distance
Resolution alone is not enough; what matters is the number of pixels per metre at the distance where you need to identify something. A 4-megapixel camera with the right lens can beat an 8-megapixel one with a wide lens that spreads its detail across a broad scene. We calculate that for you before supply, not after.
Retention period and storage capacity
How long recordings are kept is an operational decision, not a technical one: how many days do you need to go back? We size the capacity from the number of cameras, the bitrate and the movement pattern on site, and we fix the period in writing at handover — so you do not discover a month later that footage is erased before you need it.
Power and cabling
Most late failures come from the cabling rather than the device: non-compliant cable, a joint exposed to the sun, or a supply that cannot carry the load when night vision switches on. We use pure copper cable and calculated PoE, and we document the route of every cable in the handover report.
Handover and documentation
The system is handed over with a report containing the point drawing, the device details and serial numbers, the mobile access settings, and the calculated retention period. The report stays in your client portal, so if you need maintenance a year later the technician knows what was installed without starting from nothing.
And all of the above rests on the network beneath it: calculated power, separating the camera network from the working network, and port capacity. The detail is on the enterprise networks and switches page.
