Troubleshooting

Why does a camera show as offline?

A “camera disconnected” or offline message does not necessarily mean the camera has failed. In most cases the cause lies in the power, the cable or the network, and it is resolved in minutes once you know where to look. This guide orders the causes from the simplest to the most complex.

Start with the simplest: power

The most common cause is power. If the camera runs on PoE (power over the network cable), check that the switch port is working and that the power budget has not run out. If it uses a separate adapter, try another adapter or another socket. A single camera offline is usually a power or cable problem belonging to that camera alone.

The cable and the connector

The network cable or its connector (RJ45) is among the most common failures: a loose connector, a cable damaged by sun or rodents, or a length beyond the limit (100 metres for copper). Move the connector gently at the camera and at the switch and see whether it returns. If you have a spare cable, try swapping it to confirm the cause.

The network and address conflicts

Sometimes a camera has an IP address that conflicts with another device, so it disappears at random. Or the switch itself has restarted or a port has failed. Restart the switch, and make sure every camera has a unique address. If several cameras disappear together, the cause is usually the switch or the network rather than the cameras.

The recorder (NVR/DVR)

The camera may be working while the recorder has lost its connection to it: a channel has failed, the camera password has changed, or the recorder needs restarting. Go into the recorder settings and re-add the camera, or check the channel status.

The internet (if it is offline on the phone only)

There is a difference between two cases: a camera offline on the recorder screen locally (a power, cable or network problem), and a camera that shows offline in your phone app only while working locally (a problem with the site’s internet or the remote-viewing setup). The latter does not mean a camera fault at all.

A quick diagnostic sequence

  • One camera offline? Start with its power and its cable.
  • Several cameras together? Check the switch and the main power.
  • All offline on the phone only? The problem is the internet, not the cameras.
  • Appearing and disappearing at random? Suspect an IP conflict, a loose connector or the PoE budget.
FAQ

What clients ask us.

One camera is offline but the rest are fine — what does that mean?
Almost always a problem belonging to that camera alone: its power supply, its cable or its connector. Start there before suspecting the recorder or the network.
All cameras are offline on my phone but fine on the site screen.
That is an internet or remote-viewing problem, not a camera fault. Recording continues locally; only the remote view is lost.
A camera appears and disappears at random — why?
Typically an IP address conflict, a loose connector, or a PoE budget at its limit so the camera drops under load such as when night vision switches on.
