Why replace a traditional telephone with an IP telephone?
In a traditional system every desk needs its own line and its own cable, and any addition means new cabling. An IP telephone runs on the same data network that already exists: the network port feeding the computer feeds the telephone, and adding a new employee becomes a matter of programming an extension rather than pulling a cable. The trade-off is that call quality now depends on network quality — which is why we do not sell a PBX without first inspecting the network it will run on.
The PBX: on-premises or cloud?
An on-premises PBX is a device at your site; it keeps working even if the internet goes down, and it suits anyone who wants their data with them. A cloud PBX is a subscription with no hardware and no hardware maintenance, and it suits multiple branches and mobile teams. We choose by the number of users and the nature of the work, not by what is newest.
Extensions and the auto-attendant
Departments are numbered and an auto-attendant tree is built to direct the caller: sales, maintenance, accounts. Working hours can be set so that after-hours calls go to voicemail or to the on-call mobile rather than being lost.
Network first: PoE and voice quality
The telephone takes its power from the network cable over PoE, so it needs no adapter at every desk. We give voice its own logical path on the switch at a higher priority, so a call does not break up because somebody is uploading a large file at that moment. The detail of this infrastructure is on the enterprise networks and switches page.
Mobile and branch connection
An app on the employee's phone carries their extension wherever they are: they answer in the organisation's name and call from its number. Two branches in two cities become one network, so a call between branches is an internal extension rather than an outside call.
Recording and reports
Call recording for review and team training, and reports showing missed calls, peak times and answer rates. What these reports most often reveal on first use is how many customers called and nobody answered.
